The institute of mechatronic systems

The Institute of Mechatronic Systems at a Glance

The Institute of Mechatronic Systems (imes) is part of the mechanical engineering department of the Leibniz Universität Hannover. The institute's research associates receive support by well equipped mechanical and electrical work shops. In order to carry out the research projects numerous laboratories with modern equipment are available.

The imes works on both fundamental research and application oriented projects (often in close cooperation with industrial partners), characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity. Details can be found here.

The institute shows strong committment to student education and gives lectures on mechanics, robotics, and mechatronics including mechatronics in automotive and medical applications.

What is Mechatronics?

Many technical solutions are characterized by a high degree of integration of mechanical and electrical engineering as well as computer science. Systems which show an intelligent mesh of the before mentioned disciplines are called mechatronic systems. Examples of today's mechatronic systems include ABS brake, active damping of oscillations, modern machine tools, robots, and surgical instruments. The imes deals with such systems, their modeling, and control.
