  • Shape measurement and accuracy improvement of continuum robots

    Continuum robots differ from conventional serial industrial robots such that the shape of their manipulator describes a continuous space curve. Because of their small dimensions and high dexterity, they are well suited for applications in small, confined spaces (e.g. minimally invasive surgery or inspection tasks). The high compliance of these robots allows their use without the risk of damage to surrounding structures. At the same time, however, it makes it difficult to determine the exact robot pose and it complicates precise positioning of the robot tip. Therefore, my research is concerned with the development of methods to measure the shape of the entire robot structure and with techniques to improve the positioning accuracy of the manipulator.
