Course objective

This module provides a solid and broadly applicable understanding of how to analyze and work with mechatronic systems. After successfully completing the module, students will be able to:

  • explain the structure of mechatronic systems and how the actuators, sensors, and controllers used in them work,
  • describe and analyze the dynamic behavior of mechatronic systems in both the time and frequency domains,
  •  assess and evaluate the stability of dynamic systems,
  • explain model-based approaches for estimating dynamic variables without sensors, and use these to design observer-based state controllers, and
  • apply the concepts and methods taught to real-world, practice-oriented examples.

Course content

  • Introduction to the basic concepts of mechatronic systems
  • Actuators: Operating principles of electromagnetic actuators, electric servo drives, microactuators
  • Sensors: Functionality, classification, key parameters, level of integration, sensor principles
  • Bus systems and data processing, microcontrollers, interfaces
  • Fundamentals of modeling: Laplace and Fourier transforms, discretization, Z-transformation
  • Fundamentals of control systems: Stability of dynamic systems, standard controllers, observer-based state control, structural criteria, Kalman filter

Materials

The lecture-related materials will be made available for download on Stud.IP throughout the course of the lecture. These include the script, exercises, exam materials, and supplementary literature.
